Library 2.0 is an attempt to explain the function of modern libraries in a similar vein to the terms 'web 2.0' and 'business 2.0' - terms that came about after the financial crisis of the 1990's. The term Library 2.0 was coined by Michael Casey on his blog 'Library Crunch' - suggesting that public libraries especially are at a crossroad as to how they function at a consumer/user level.
The principle behind library 2.0 is that the user is the guiding force - as in an economic analogy - the library patron is actually responsible for the way the library operates. The customer service role is turned about, and the library patron becomes a contributor of how information is dispersed as well.
As such, a library's computer management system will need to be updated and varied in response to the customer's wishes and needs - this is already seen in how many libraries function with less emphasis placed upon the 'librarian behind the main desk' scenario. Greater personal interaction and communication is one of the keys of Library 2.0.
